By Emil Ferris

This book is nothing short of a marvel. A masterpiece of art, storytelling, and sheer creativity, Ferris gives us an unforgettable vision. Using late 60’s Chicago as a setting, Ferris tells us the story of 10-year-old Karen Reyes. Karen is obsessed with monsters, to the point where she imagines herself as a werewolf. She is also obsessed with solving the murder of her upstairs neighbor, a beautiful and enigmatic holocaust survivor. What starts out as a murder mystery expands into Karen’s maturation, as she deals with real world events and family tragedy.

As the library’s graphic novel expert, I’ve read a lot of comics and graphic novels in my lifetime. My favorite thing is that Monsters ranks among the best. Karen is an amazing narrator with keen insights into the world around her, and the book is full of jaw-dropping artwork and a great supporting cast. Check it out- you won’t regret it. It’s like nothing you’ve ever read.
