I’m really not a fan of the “wild west” Gold Rush era, so it was a surprise when I found myself drawn to this book and its amazing cover art. Kate is not your typical female protagonist; she’s a violent and vengeful daughter on a hunt to find the men responsible for murdering her father in cold blood. The book has a lot of the tropes you can find in any YA novel: a girl disguised as a boy, a hate-to-love relationship with a male companion, etc. Despite those familiar attributes, the story was extremely engaging and kept me riveted to the plot, which moved pretty fast. I appreciated that the author didn’t shy away from the violence, death and gore in this book, which was conveyed in detail. Kate was immediately lovable in the way that she cared only for her father and her desire for closure after the traumatic events she experienced. This book gave me serious Westworld vibes! I’m definitely looking forward to reading the companion novel.
