By Raina Telgemeier
Oh man, this one brought me back to my high school theater days.
Cal is the set designer for her school’s musical, Moon Over Mississippi. She’s determined to make it look awesome and make the cannon as epic as possible even though they have a low budget. But even though Cal is behind the scenes in the school play, she can’t seem to escape the all-too-real drama of high school.
While the spotlight is on the backstage production, the book also has a realistic look at middle school romance, with it’s ups and downs and miscommunications. I especially loved the inclusiveness of the gay/bi best friend–and that both characters had their own journey and own arc. Both more sure of themselves and self aware than at the beginning of the story.
Middle School Graphic Novel Perfection.
