By V. E. Schwab

This book is magical with a dark twist.  Kell Maresh is one of only two known magicians left who can travel between the three alternate versions of London: Red London, where people embrace magic; Grey London, where people have forgotten magic; and White London, where people covet magic.  Kell has spent the majority of his life as an ambassador and adopted son of the King of Red London, passing messages between the royals of each parallel world.  This poses a bit of a problem when, on one of his many routine expeditions, he runs into a thief from Grey London named Delilah Bard, who turns his world upside down.

This book richly re-imagines a historical time in London with many complex characters.  The author does a great job of giving each character the spotlight while highlighting plot points.  This book was a wild ride full of mortal peril, blood magic, political corruption and adventure.
