capture 2“The house on Mango street” is the tale of Esperanza Cordero, a 14-year-old girl of Hispanic heritage living in Chicago whose family is trying to provide a better future.

The book is short and is written in vignettes or small chapters/stories that center on the emotions, hopes , world discovery and also crude awakenings to reality of Esperanza.

Life isn’t easy for a teenager but life is even harder when poverty and despair are all around. Esperanza’s character puts a face to all the immigrants or first generation Americans who have to battle identity crisis , homesickness and sensation of displacement.

Through these stories we get to know the world of Esperanza, small and dark at moments but also filled with tiny rays of sunshine. All in all, a beautiful and powerful raw story told simply and with honesty.
