In the latest book of Penny’s Three Pines mystery series ,Inspector Gamache is now retired and living contentedly with his wife in the idyllic town of Three Pines in the province of Quebec, Canada. As his replacement at the Surete asked him if he would be interested in becoming the new Superintendent, a nine-year old local boy is found dead. Now this boy was known for his vivid imagination and grandiose storytelling. In one of his out-of-this-world stories the boy claimed he has seen “the biggest gun in the world with a monster on it” but his reputation preceded him and nobody took him seriously. His death was declared a bicycle accident. But experience alerted Inspector Gamache of the inconsistencies of the crime scene so he proposes himself to unveil the true cause of the death and maybe the veracity of the boy statements when he was alive.
This book is one of her best storylines ever, the plot is very complex and incorporates subjects such as underground arms dealers and the lengths to which people will go out of greed and evil. The story has some sad moments and is reminiscent to Agatha Christie’s ” Halloween Party” because of the death of a child is involved.
