It’s 1998 in Paris, France and Aimee Leduc is struggling to keep her lifestyle as a self-employed Detective and a single mother. Her 6 month baby Chloe has been demanding more and more of her time so in order to keep the Detective agency going ( which she co-runs with her cousin Rene) and the night-time espionage work , she has been forced to hire a nanny Babette .
One night Aimee is accosted by a French gypsy (referred pejoratively by French people as Manouche), the young boy begs Aimee to come see his mother who is dying of cancer and who swears she knows a big secret about Aimee’s own Dad.
But when Aimee finally can extricate herself from her busy life in order to visit the boy’s mother in the hospital, she discovers that there are bigger forces involved and the woman is missing. From them on, it becomes a race against time in order to discover the real killer of her Dad and to save the fate of the poor gypsy woman.
I love this series because Aimee Leduc is such a strong character, an independent woman who is pretty much fearless but constantly haunted by the ghosts of her detached mother and her complicated yet loving dead father and all of the emotional baggage that seems to drag her deeper and deeper in the underbelly of the French political circles.
