child 44by Tom Rob Smith

The Russia of Stalin – bleak, full of fear and poverty yet officially the pinnacle of socialist prosperity. A killer of children surfaces and it is up to state security officer and former war hero Leo Demidov to investigate. Unfortunately for him, the state is not ready nor willing to get to the truth and Leo’s life goes from tolerable to threatened.

Interesting historical time period. It will make you wonder how anyone could have lived under such a regime – where fear and mistrust of fellow citizens was the norm, families could be shot on sight or made to disappear into terrible prisons. Where truth was hidden behind propaganda. An interesting, tense read.
