by Naomi Novik

An adult fairytale, Uprooted tells the tale of Agnieszka, a young village woman inexplicably chosen by the local wizard to fulfill his 10-year contract with the town in exchange for protection. The setting and names are vaguely medieval Russian, the story right out of fairy tales of old. For at the edge of Agnieszka’s idyllic village lies the Wood, a malevolent, utterly dangerous place barely held at bay by the wizard known as the Dragon.

Agnieszka’s journey from simple village girl to woman of her own considerable power is well-imagined and well-written. The story unfolds in complexity and danger, with interesting layered characters, lots of action, and a satisfying conclusion. The imagery of this book will stay with me a long time.

A definite recommendation!
