I was warned that this book was too “science-y” before I started it. But let me tell you, it’s not. Yes, there is a lot of fascinating science taking center-stage in the drama, but the story flows along easily and is quite a page-turner. Astronaut (and general wise-ass) Mark Watney finds himself marooned on Mars. Thankfully, he’s both a mechanical engineer and a botanist, making his attempts to survive both creative and fascinating. I was hooked almost immediately by the writing, hair-raising events, and ultimate triumph of this one man’s story. Think of Castaway but with more humor and epic disaster.
The movie is set to release in November, starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott. Damon is a perfect Watney. 🙂 Just the right mix of competence, vulnerability, and sarcasm.
