In the fifth book in the series by Frances McNamara relating the adventures of Emily Cabot. In this book we find Emily Chapman, nee Emily Cabot, a former scholar of Northwestern University in the city of Chicago in the late 1800’s.
Emily Cabot seems to be content at their home in Chicago taking care of her two small children. But relationships with her husband Stephen are strained and he has been spending a lot of time away from home studying the beginnings of radiology science with Emil Grubbe.After Emily is forced to attend an on-site procedure at thee School of medicine by her husband where she meets Dr Mary Stone and Dr Ida Kahn,both doctors of chinese heritage .Emily recognizes the merit and efforts that both young doctors who have emigrated to the United States to study medicine and help their country with teir newly acquired knowledge at the same time fighting to get recognized in a male dominant field. But when Dr. Mary Stone is accused of killing a chinese herbalist in Chinatown. Emily must try to help her and find her old way in life and maybe her passion for her career again in order to try to save her marriage.
What i really like about this book is the fluidity of the book, the story moves so nicely and the characters are so engaging. Also i love how the author did her research and highlighted historic , social and political facts happening in Chicago at that time that gave a more realistic touch to the story.
