Young widow Sophie Mae Reynolds is a soap maker. She lives with her best friend Meghan and Meghan’s daughter. Life seems to be going just fine. Her home-based business keeps growing until one day she finds their neighbor and local handyman Walter Hanover dead in her workroom (supposedly after having committed suicide by drinking lye, a material that Sophie Mae uses in her soap business). Although she isn’t more of a suspect than anyone else in the house, she sets to find out why Walter would commit suicide, and why in their home of all places. Her journey becomes more and more dangerous when during her own investigation she crosses the wrong people.
This series is a light read – fun paced and perfect for a weekend or a lazy time. The characters are very believable and almost endearing, the mystery keeping well until the end. (Also, it has some recipes for homemade toiletries!)
